Ger Sweeney

IMG_20180320_193239The Emerald Connection was founded and is run by Irish freelance broadcaster, Ger Sweeney. Ger has been working in the radio industry in Ireland and beyond since 1981. Back then Ireland had many “pirate” radio stations as legislation to regulate and licence the industry did not come along until 1988. The first of the new radio stations commenced broadcasting in 1989. Between 1981 and 1988 Ger worked for various stations in Limerick and Galway.

One of the first of the new Irish radio stations to come on air in 1989 was Clare FM, based in Ennis. Ger was part of that, in fact he was the first voice on air at the station. He spent 4 years with Clare FM on Breakfast until he was head hunted in August 1993 to present the Breakfast Programme at Limerick 95.

Ger returned to Clare FM in 1999 to present a nightly programme and was back on Breakfast from January 2000. His stint with Clare FM lasted until July 2002. At that point he took a break from radio as he had a young family and he wanted to explore other business interests that came along.

The microphone beckoned again in late 2005 when Clare FM invited Ger to return and head a new pilot service which was called Clare FM 2. This was an experiment with an “opt-out” service that ran for three years. The economic downturn was looming around that time so the opt-out was terminated. Ger had the option of remaining on at Clare FM but he chose to again take a break as he had recently launched a promotions company that needed his full attention.

At this time there was a move towards podcasting and online radio. Ger, working from a home studio developed a number of podcasts and created an Irish radio programme that was syndicated on 14 radio stations across Europe once a week.

Ger has been working as a freelance broadcaster since then and this includes working with Clare FM covering sick leave and vacation time across the schedule. The option to freelance is entirely his own. In July 2017 Ger covered Breakfast on Clare FM for three weeks…. He remained in that slot until end of May 2018 working daily from 6am until 9am. The decision to stop the early mornings was Ger’s as a number of projects in Ireland and Spain needed his attention. He remains a freelance broadcaster for Clare FM.

Ger launched his new Irish programme, “Live on Eire” on Spain-based Talk Radio Europe (TRE) on 30th April 2018. The programme is Spain’s only dedicated Irish programme and is broadcast on Monday evenings from both Ireland and Spain, depending on where he is on a weekly basis.

Along with his broadcasting endeavours over the years he has been working in different disciplines and industries simultaneously. For the last number of years he has been running his own print management company which boasts a very impressive client list including some of the country’s leading companies.

The Emerald Connection is Ger’s latest venture and is designed to create content for Irish people across the world and for other nationalities who have an interest in Ireland and Irish affairs.
